The Loom Company Annual Showroom Sale
Pop-Up Gallery: Jeannie Weissglass
September 23-28 at the Hable Construction storefront
117 Perry St. (btwn Hudson & Greenwich) New York, NY 10014
Tue hours: 6pm - 9pm
Wed – Sat hours: noon – 7pm
Sunday hours: noon – 6pm
New York-based fine art painter Jeannie Weissglass, whose work has been featured in the Village Voice and Elle Décor, will be exhibiting original work at the retail storefront, Hable Construction as part of a special one-week “Pop-Up Gallery.” From Tuesday, September 23 – Sunday, September 28, the store will be transformed into a gallery space with its regular retail business put on hold to showcase Weissglass’ rarely-exhibited paintings. Seldom hosting events, this will be a very unique and special event for the store.
about the artist: Jeannie Weissglass’s artistic background is as vast and complex as the paintings themselves. Weissglass’ education has spanned from the New York Studio School to France’s L’ecole Des Arts Decoratifs. Her culmination of studies including textile design, art history, archaeology, and figure drawing combined with her fascination to meld the figurative with the abstract, result in paintings with layered meanings. Weissglass’ paintings are at times romantic, subtly political, and based off of lost innocence and civilization. The characters depicted often embody a variety of roles and relationships: a man portrayed can be a lover, a solider of peace, a soldier of war, and a symbol of power. Striking colors and the standout movements rendered by expressive brushstrokes are the trademarks of Weissglass’ paintings. Weissglass’ inspiration draws from sources like childhood encyclopedias, folk art, and fables, to old Spanish painters Goya and Velázquez. Growing up with a mother whose passions were painting, interior design, and extravagant antique collections, Weissglass was surrounded by textiles, patterns, and color at the foundation of her upbringing. Her inspiration transfers into the process in where layers of old wallpaper and documents form the base and character of select paintings.

Design on a Dime - (Housing Works)
May 9-10th at the Metropolitan Pavilion, 125 W. 18th St. New York, NY
Hable Construction has been invited to participate in the 4th annual Design on a Dime benefit sponsored by Housing Works Thrift Shops, Real Simple magazine, and Benjamin Moore paints. This year, 28 designers were asked to design their own vignettes showcasing their products as well as with donated props, furniture, and accessories to complete the look. All items seen in the vignettes are sold at the benefit on May 9-10th, with proceeds going to Housing Works, the nation's largest grassroots AIDS service organization.
The editors at Real Simple magazine also threw in a designer's challenge this year, presenting featured designers with the same three accessories to incorporate into each vignette showing how they can make each piece work in any room. The pieces are a Chinoiserie chair from Ballard Designs, a tray from Mitchell Gold and Bob Williams, and a bedside lamp from Circa Lighting, all of which have been generously donated to Design on a Dime. Press coverage of Design on a Dime will appear in the September 2008 issue of Real Simple magazine.
